I. ENTRY AND GENERAL PROCEDURE

 1. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license.

2. All drivers must wear a safety helmet and eye protection.

3. Drivers under the age of 18 must have written permission from parent or guardian.

4. Each driver and person in the pits will sign a waiver upon entering the grounds to relieve the Kandiyohi County Fair or Fair Board of any responsibility or liability in the contest.

5. All cars enter through the South Gate.  South Gate will be open for entry from 4 PM to 6 PM.

6. All cars must be removed from the fairgrounds the same night as the derby unless arrangements are made with the demo committee.

7. All drivers and cars must be at the fairgrounds by 6 PM.   Inspections will be done by 6:45 PM.

8.  The derby committee will be the judge and all its decisions are final.

9. NO alcoholic beverage is permitted on the fairgrounds or in the pit.

10. Entry fee for all classes will be $35 if paid the night of the demo and covers the car and driver.

11. Entry fee for all classes will be $30 if paid before August 4th.

12. Pit persons may be included by signing the wavier form and a fee of $15 per pit person.  Pit fee is paid at the gate when entering.  Only one tow vehicle in the pit with each car is allowed. Please do not have children in the pits for their own safety.  Parents must sign the wavier for their children. 

13. Car number should be placed on both sides of the car and have number sign on the roof.

14. There will be five classes of cars: COMPACT, PICKUP, MID SIZED, MINIVAN, AND CHAIN STOCK.

COMPACT CLASS will be car of less than 105” wheel base.

COMPACT CLASS can not have V-8 engines

MID SIZED CLASS will be cars of more than 105” wheel base.  Excluding Chrysler Imperial.

CHAIN STOCK CLASS will be 1978 or newer, no wagons or Imperials.

MINIVAN

15.  Classes to run on Thursday August 7th are: Compact, Mid Sized, Pickup & Minivan.

       Classes to run on Saturday August 9th are: Compact, Mid Sized, Pickup, Chain Stock & Minivan.

16. The car modification rules will apply to all classes.

17. We consider Demo Derby to be an individual event and not a team effort.

18. Be sure your car is complete before coming to the fairgrounds.

 

II. CAR MODIFICATION AND SAFETY FOR ALL CLASSES

 1. All cars must have seat belts. Drivers must wear safety helmets and eye protection.

2. All glass must be removed from car before coming to the derby.

3. You must have a 15” by 15” upright sign with your car number on both sides on the roof of the car.

4. Trunks must be empty.

5. Hood must be secured after inspection by 2 chains or not more than 4 pins through to the frame or bumper.  All hoods should have at least 2 six-inch diameter holes cut in the hood for fire fighting purposes.

6. If dash is removed, a 2” OD pipe or tubing is allowed to be welded where dash was removed.  Also, 1/2-inch rod can be welded vertically where windshield was removed.

7.  All body parts including fenders and bumpers must be left on.  Fenders may be cut out to allow wheels to clear sheet metal.

8. Padding of steering wheel or inside of driver door recommended. Bars across outside of driver’s door not to exceed 2” angle iron and not to go beyond 6” past door jams.  Brace behind driver’s seat from post to post not to exceed 2” OD pipe.

9. Transmission shift lever maybe located on the floor.

10. Battery must be fastened to floor in the front passenger area and covered. Two batteries are permitted.

11.  All cars will be restricted to approximately 4 gallons of gas in the tank.  The gas tank must be made of steel and located in the center of the back seat area of the car.  The gas tank must be secured by metal straps, be bolted to the floor, and protected on all sides of the tank so as to prevent a rupture and leaking any fuel.  Any gas lines other than the standard equipment must be located in the center of the car.  Any car leaking fuel will be flagged out.  Fuel line through firewall must be metal line.

12. Front A frame may be weld-up for height.

13.  All doors may be welded.  Doors should also be secured by chain.

14.  Car tires only.  Mud, snow, or regular treads. No studded tires. No pickup tires or truck tires in Midsize or Compact class.  No screws or fastening of tires to rims.

15. All trailer hitches must be removed.

16. Exhaust modification may be through the hood with a vertical outlet; however judges reserve the right to disqualify any changes deemed to create hazards to participants or spectators.

17. Front wheel drive, transverse engine shall be chained, cabled, or strapped down.

18. No changes to be made after inspection and before your preliminary heat.

19. All cars modified in any manner except set forth in derby rules will not be allowed in the derby.

20.  Any objectionable picture, logo, or slogan must be removed from all demo cars.  The Fair Board reserves the right to ask that any objectionable material be removed from demo cars or they will not be allowed to participate.

21. No concrete or foam filled frame or body parts.

22.  Clamping of springs is allowed, only two per leaf spring.  Bumper height must be 21 inches or less to top of the bumper.

23.    Rear ends may be modified as long as they are 5 lug axles.  Must be passenger car rear ends.

24.    Cooling system must be original and must contain WATER ONLY.

25.    Transmission coolers may be located inside the car; however it must be bolted to the floor and shielded from the driver.  No roof mounts. Must be in metal container.

26.    Each driver must have a fully functional 5 pound ABC fire extinguisher on site in the tow vehicle.

 

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR MIDSIZE, COMPACT, PICKUP CLASS

 

1. Trunks must be empty. Welding of trunk lid will be no more than 6 welds, each no longer than 3”.  Trunks should have access to be inspected.  Station wagon tailgates may be welded shut.

2. Suspension must be standard factory equipment; normal height with no air shocks, spacers, blocks for raising or shackles reversed.  No reinforcement of torsion bars will be permitted.

3. No extra cooling inside or out.  Only stock radiator for cooling engine and in stock position.

4. No extra weights or reinforcements are permitted.

 

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR PICKUP CLASS

 

1. All two wheel drive 1/2 and 3/4 ton pickups are allowed.  No suburban or blazer type vehicles will be allowed.

2.  Tailgates must be welded shut or removed.

3.  Gas tanks must be in the box and secured to the box.  Must have 6”hole in cab and box for gas line.

4.  No split rims allowed. Tires: 6 ply tires or 6 ply rating tires are allowed.  Nothing above 6 ply allowed.

5. Cab and box may have extra bolting.

6. Both doors may be welded shut.

7. Battery and transmission cooler must be in cab.

8. Pickup must have bumpers on front and rear.  Bumpers can be welded to the frame.  No extension of frame.

9. Hood can be fastened with 4 bolts (3/4”) only two bolts to the frame.

10. Front suspension can be solid.  A-frame can be welded but no reinforcements.  Reinforced tie rods accepted.

11. Eight extra bolts allowed in floor of box using large washers.  Angle iron 3”x3” can be welded across tailgate.  Front fenders and inner fenders can be bolted together, 5 bolts underneath fender, 3/8” max diameter.  Rear fenders and box can be bolted together with 5 bolts on each side of box with 3/8” max diameter.  Tailgate can be welded to rear bumper, solid or stripped.

12. Gas line from engine through firewall must be steel.

13. Pickups can have a cage welded around driver.  Driver’s window must have welded strips or mesh across for driver protection.

14. Interior of cab must have extra bolting or welding to secure cab to frame.

15. Rear axel can be pre-loaded.

 

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR CHAIN STOCK CLASS

 

1.   Any mass-produced 2 wheel drive car.  No wagons or Imperials. Cars must be 1978 or newer.

2.      Absolutely NO WELDING OR CUTTING of body or frame.

3.      Doors must be chained only.  Bracing in back of driver is allowed and welding of driver’s door is permitted.

4.      No modification of shift linkage.

5.      Battery and gas tank must be inside of car (one battery only).

6.      Trunk and hood must be chained (no welding).

7.      Transmission cooler must be in stock location.

8.      Headers may be used with holes cut in hood.

9.      Absolutely no welding of rear-ends.

10.  Dash must be left in. Do not remove.

11.  All glass, plastics, fiberglass, white metal must be removed.

12.  This is a stock division.

 

DEMO RULES FOR ALL CLASSES

 

1.  Drivers must remain in car until race is over or flagman stops the race for safety reasons.

2. No sandbagging, phony car trouble, hide and seek, tag team, tap and touch allowed.  We know the tricks. We will catch you.

3. Unassisted shot in the driver’s door will get you disqualified.

4. Any cars leaking gas will be flagged out.

5. If the event is stopped a 2nd time to put out a fire in your car, you will be disqualified. 

6. Any car that is put on time by the Demo officials will have 2 minutes to start up and make contact with another car.  After 2 minutes if the car fails to make contact, that car will be flagged out of the race at that point.

7. DO NOT hit a car with the lath down.

8.   FOR THE MIDSIZE CLASS:  There will be three or four heat races depending on the number of cars entered.  The top 3 cars of each heat will go on to the championship.  The remaining cars are eligible for the consolation race.  You must compete in a heat race to be eligible for the consolation.  The top 3 cars of the consolation race will also go on to the championship.

9.  FOR THE COMPACT, PICKUP, AND CHAIN STOCK: There will be heat races if there are enough cars.  If there are not enough entries we will run one race for the championship.

10. Possession or drinking of alcoholic beverages in the pit area before, during or after demolitions derbies is prohibited.  Violation of this rule will result in team disqualification and immediate expulsion.

 

AWARDS AND PRIZES

 

1.  Must have three entries in class to run class and pay out prize money..

2.  Trophies will be given for the championship and best looking car.

3.  Trophies and prizes will be awarded on the night of the event.
